Revash and the museum of Leymebamba

The Revash mausoleums are a necropolis or funerary center built by the Chachapoyas culture on the rock face of a ravine, located in the annex of San Bartolo, Santo Tomás district, Luya province, Amazonas department, Peru. They are characterized by being rectangular constructions embedded in the cliff of a mountain, more than 2,800 meters above sea level, their walls are decorated with quadrangular niches, in the shape of a cross or a “T”, and some with cave paintings, which decorate both the mausoleums and the rocks surrounding the constructions, the Revash mausoleums were used to place the mummified bodies of the most important rulers of the Chachapoya culture.

Visiting the Leymebamba Community Museum should not be an exception if you come to Chachapoyas, this museum exhibits and preserves the second largest collection of Inca Quipus in Peru, more than 219 mummies that are perfectly preserved, in addition to exhibiting more than 2,000 objects of incalculable historical value, all from the mausoleums of the Laguna de los Cóndores, visiting this museum is traveling back in time to a grand past of the Chachapoya culture, who inhabited and dominated the cloud forest.

The Revash mausoleums are located at an altitude of 2,800 meters above sea level, which could cause altitude sickness (soroche). It is recommended to allow time to acclimatize before visiting.
