Description
Kuélap Fortress – The Machu Picchu of the North
Towering high in the cloud forests of northern Peru, the Fortress of Kuélap is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in South America. Built by the Chachapoya civilization around the 6th century AD, this walled city is perched at 3,000 meters (9,840 ft) above sea level and features massive stone walls, mysterious carvings, and panoramic mountain views.
Why Visit Kuélap?
Kuélap is often referred to as the “Machu Picchu of the North”—but it’s older, larger, and far less crowded. Surrounded by mist and perched atop a ridge, the site includes more than 500 circular stone structures, ceremonial buildings, and defensive towers, all enclosed by walls reaching up to 20 meters (65 feet) high.
Trip Highlights
- Gigantic defensive walls with narrow, trapezoidal entrances
- Iconic circular houses with carved friezes
- The “Templo mayor” ceremonial tower with astronomical significance
- Cable car transfer for 22 minutes
- Stunning views over the Utcubamba Valley
